Laser pulse reflectance of the ocean surface from the GLAS satellite lidar

چکیده
[1] The world’s oceans can potentially be used as an extended target for achieving a radiometric calibration of space borne lidar if the reflective properties of the surface can be accurately predicted from available environmental data such as wind speed. To test current understanding of ocean reflectance we compare surface pulse returns measured with the 1064 nm altimetry channel of the Geoscience Laser Altimeter System (GLAS) on the Ice, Cloud and land Elevation Satellite (ICESat) with the predictions of near-IR reflectance from current ocean models. Measurements of wind speed retrieved from the SeaWinds database of the QuikSCAT satellite provide the model input. We find that while ocean models do not provide a full description of the nadir lidar observations this calibration technique yields a precision that exceeds that accomplished using White Sands as a target and that does not require the coordination that accompanies specialized calibration experiments. Global Laser Pulse Reflectance at 1064 Nm of Snow and Land Surfaces from the Geosciences Laser Altimeter System Satellite Lidar
During the development of the Geoscience Laser Altimeter System (GLAS), launched in 2003, it was understood that the values of surface pusle reflectance was an important design parameter for satellite laser altimeters and that the magnitude of observed pulse reflectance would have valuable applications. Thus a significant effort was made to obtain calibrated surface pulse reflectance from GLAS ...

The Geoscience Laser Altimeter System aboard NASA’s Ice, Cloud and land Elevation Satellite will record the height distribution of laser energy reflected from surfaces within 70 m diameter footprints. For land surfaces, post-processing of this waveform data will be used to estimate the within-footprint mean elevation and surface relief due to ground slope and roughness, vegetation cover, buildi...
متن کاملRetrievals of Thick Cloud Optical Depth from the Geoscience Laser Altimeter System (GLAS) by Calibration of Solar Background Signal
Laser beams emitted from the Geoscience Laser Altimeter System (GLAS), as well as other spaceborne laser instruments, can only penetrate clouds to a limit of a few optical depths. As a result, only optical depths of thinner clouds ( about 3 for GLAS) are retrieved from the reflected lidar signal. This paper presents a comprehensive study of possible retrievals of optical depth of thick clouds u...
متن کاملUsing Satellite and Airborne LiDAR to Model Woodpecker Habitat Occupancy at the Landscape Scale
Incorporating vertical vegetation structure into models of animal distributions can improve understanding of the patterns and processes governing habitat selection. LiDAR can provide such structural information, but these data are typically collected via aircraft and thus are limited in spatial extent. Our objective was to explore the utility of satellite-based LiDAR data from the Geoscience La...
متن کاملAssessment of terrain elevation derived from satellite laser altimetry over mountainous forest areas using airborne lidar data
Gaussian decomposition has been used to extract terrain elevation from waveforms of the satellite lidar GLAS (Geoscience Laser Altimeter System), on board ICESat (Ice, Cloud, and land Elevation Satellite). The common assumption is that one of the extracted Gaussian peaks, especially the lowest one, corresponds to the ground. However, Gaussian decomposition is usually complicated due to the broa...
